Journalists from any European country (and Israel) and working for any of the print or broadcast media can apply, including freelancers. They must be professional journalists with an experience of at least two years. Scientific background is not required, and generalists with an interest in research are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to broadcast or print journalists with staff or editorial position and freelancers, although science illustrators and photographers will be considered.

English is the lingua franca in all laboratories involved in the programme and is thus the official programme language. Reasonable competence in English is mandatory. Knowledge of biological principles and methods is not essential. However, because the purpose of the programme is to offer a novel experience, journalists with recent advanced degrees in biology or extensive laboratory training are not encouraged to apply. Staff seniority is not a criterion.

Selection of the candidates is based on the information provided in a detailed application form and various criteria, such as the need to consider a wide spread of nationalities and the relative benefits of the experience for each applicant.
