| What is it | | EICOS is a programme that wants to improve the communication between journalists and scientists. Within an eight-day hands-on laboratory experience they work side by side at the cutting edge of scientific research. |

| What happens and when | | Journalists apply various modern techniques from the wider field of molecular and cellular biology and discuss impacts on society with scientists. The course generally takes place in early spring, applications must be submitted several months before the beginning of the course. |

| Who can participate | | Professional journalists from any European country and any media with at least two years experience can apply. Scientific background is not necessary, but reasonable competence in English is mandatory. |

| Which research areas are covered | | Host for the Hands-on Laboratory are departments of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen. |
 |
| Which other institutions are involved | | Fellows who opt for an Extended Laboratory Assignment will be welcomed by renowned research institutions in Europe. |

| Support | | A concerted effort of different institutions makes the performance of the programme possible. |
